The exhibition Kawii Katchihtinum reflects the Métis Nation’s ongoing effort to restore its cultural heritage after generations of suppression. Canadian Métis Nation artist Wendy DesChene's family’s recent acknowledgment as members marks the end of a long struggle to reclaim their identity. Through digital algorithms, Indigenous motifs such as buffalo are merged with colonial depictions of North American landscapes, deconstructing and reshaping Eurocentric visions. This visual reclamation echoes traditional practices like beading, offering a slow, meditative process of healing. By layering First Nations elements, the artwork challenges colonial narratives, allowing forgotten stories to surface and be better understood.
