A patent protects inventions by granting inventors exclusive rights, helping turn ideas into valuable assets. Learn the different types of patents, utility, design, and plant, and understand what can be patented, including the requirements of novelty, usefulness, and non-obviousness. Discover who may apply for a patent, from individual inventors to research teams. Also, explore foreign patents and international treaties that support global innovation. Understand the role of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and how Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRCs) provide free tools and guidance. This workshop also explains the benefits of patent searching, patentability, and prior art, introduces the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) system, outlines effective patent search strategies, and shows how to find registered patent agents and attorneys to support your innovation journey.
