Georgia Southern is excited to announce the launch of the Soaring Standards: Embracing and Upholding Protected Classes series, a voluntary training series that dives into specific groups named in law and policy as protected. Facilitated by the Office of Legal Affairs, these sessions aim to help participants understand the practical implications of legal protections in both workplace and educational settings.

The first session will focus on the legal framework surrounding protected characteristics of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. This session is co-facilitated by the Counseling Center.

This session aims to:

• Understanding Legal Protections: Participants will be able to identify and explain the key legal protections and rights afforded to individuals based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression under applicable laws and University and USG policies.
• Recognizing Discrimination and Harassment: Participants will be equipped to recognize signs of discrimination and harassment related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression in various environments, including the workplace, educational institutions, and public spaces.
• Implementing Compliant Practices: Participants will learn strategies for complying with applicable laws and policies related to the protected classes of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, including best practices for workplace management and interpersonal interactions.
• Responding to Issues and Complaints: Participants will develop skills to effectively address and respond to issues and complaints related to discrimination or harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, including understanding appropriate channels for reporting and resolving such matters.
