MFA Thesis Exhibition: Stephen Harmon " "
On View: March 21-27
Reception: March 24, 5-7 p.m.
Stephen Harmon’s paintings and painting-based installations explore the tension between abstraction, representation, and reality, the mysterious intersection between readability and unreadability. He is searching for the halfperceived, the point at which a perplexed viewer must choose the content of the work. This has led to installations, materials, marks, and a palette that suggests multiple spatial and figural possibilities, because these possibilities offer questions to the viewer, not statements. Instead of distinct places with clear figures, he creates liminal figurespaces: spaces that are between multiple spatial possibilities, all saturated with human presences and figures that are between selves.
