MFA candidate Austin Buchanan’s work investigates the idea of space. How the space created by an artwork acts within itself, with other pieces, and with its surroundings. Motivated by abstraction, exploration and attraction, working primarily in 2D traditional media his art asks the question; How can 2-Dimensional work truly exist in actual (physical) space. Yes it is an object in real time but how can that interact in a 3-Dimensional manner with the viewer, or with other surroundings? Can it activate, nullify, or create a new sense of spatial engagement once presented? The body of work created for this show was made from January 2021 to October 2023.
