Matthew Fields is an emerging artist, laborer, and educator from St. Louis, Missouri, now based in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. His artwork explores the relations of Black experience and labor, using series of paintings and assemblages of found and crafted objects derived from the influences of his past experience, such as wearing both a manual laborer’s painter’s pants and a professional’s necktie. Through his art, Fields invites viewers to learn about Black art and Black artists regardless of the viewers' race or gender—to think about the Black man, his representation, trials, tribulations, and triumphs, and ask what each of us must do to realize our own potentials and to capitalize on our own opportunities. Fields received his bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
