 Background:\n\nThe Academy served as a pivotal training ground for leaders
  of the American Civil Rights Movement\, including work by the Southern Ch
 ristian Leadership Conference (SCLC) under Andrew Young\, and the extraord
 inary contributions of Septima Clark and Dorothy Cotton. Septima Clark\, a
  Gullah Geechee woman from South Carolina\, was the director of teacher tr
 aining and an active member of the National Association for the Advancemen
 t of Colored People (NAACP). Dorothy Cotton was the highest-ranking female
  in the SCLC's inner circle.
