Abstract:

Sierra Leone has a gross domestic product per capita of $400 and is among the least developed countries in the world. The outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa between 2014 and 2016 resulted in 14,061 confirmed cases and 3,955 deaths. Over the past three years, I have been part of a team that is evaluating a vaccine against EVD in Kambia in rural northern Sierra Leone. In this presentation, I will reflect on our experience and share progress in the trials, the challenges associated with research in post-emergency settings and the opportunities offered for capacity-building towards long-term public health research in Sierra Leone. I will also discuss our experiences within the context of current challenges in COVID-19 vaccine evaluation and uptake in low-resource settings.
